ELEMENTARY LEVEL TEAM PROJECT

Streszczenie w jezyku polskim

A team of students at the University of Northern Iowa is working with Mrs. Bovia's fifth-grade class from Kittrell Elementary school in Waterloo, IA to collaborate with classes in Poland and the Netherlands. We plan to partake in an awesome experience that intertwines three classes from three countries in a collaborative and comparative project focussing on the concept of culture.

An overview of the project at the elementary level is focusing on specific concepts that are related to culture. For example, the first lesson is "Honor, Thy Flag!" Students are asked to reflect on the history of the Polish, Dutch, and American flags. When the students have an understanding of symbolism and the use of map colors as representation, then the exciting part occurs. The students become designers and architects of a new home country flag that represents something important and significant to the learners--what they deem important.

Lesson two involves the students reflecting on holidays and the meanings of celebrations. As the students discover why celebrations occur, they will become the designers and architects of a new national holiday for their country. This lesson is designed to develop a concrete perspective of why groups of people are bonded together by the celebration of special occasions.

Finally, lessons three and four will have the students working in small groups. Students will plan, design, and construct dioramas. The dioramas will reflect what students feel would be a Utopian community. The group of people (culture) will have a flag and a holiday that will be representations of what they feel are important characteristics of a society.
