A marker remains as a memorial to the homesite of James Brownell, the first soldier from Black Hawk County to die in the Civil War. He perished at the Battle of Blue Hills Missouri on September 17, 1861. Several community organizations were named in honor of Brownell, and it was one of these organizations, the Women's Relief Corps. No. 26 who dedicated this memorial to Brownell in 1937.
